Don’t Stop Believin’…Stern Pinball May Have the License for Journey

Updated: Nov 22, 2023

Here's an interesting pre-Thanksgiving rumor, hot off the press. Yesterday the fantastic pinball content maker Wormhole Pinball, uploaded an interview with Chris Kooluris from Kaneda's Pinball Podcast to YouTube.

At the 20 minute mark of the interview, Chris stated that someone with "loose lips" at IAAPA recently let slip that Stern Pinball has the license to make a pinball machine based on the iconic 80's band Journey.

Journey was so popular back in the heyday of arcades in the 80s that Bally Midway actually made an arcade game based upon the band in 1983. Below are several pictures that I took of this fairly rare Journey arcade game several years ago at my friend's awesome arcade The Morristown Game Vault in Morristown, NJ. The wild thing about this machine is that the cabinet actually contains a cassette player that plays Journey songs through the speakers at certain points in the game. Gameplay for the Journey game consists of a bunch of mini games, sort of like the 1982 Bally Midway arcade classic TRON.

Anyhow, back to pinball. What do you think about the possibility of a new Journey pinball machine? I personally think that it's a great idea. Of course, I'm also in my 40s (barely lol) so Journey's music and the 80s nostalgia that I associate with it would be right in the target demographic for a pin based on the band. Has anyone else heard this rumor? Chime in in the comments or via e-mail at knapparcade@gmail.com .

I hope that everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving!

Music group theme based pinball requires a certain level of admiration for the artist‘s music, seeing as you will be listening to it every time you play. That is why I always grimace when I hear another music group theme is coming out; taking the potential spot of a great original theme or sought after movie theme.

Now if an Oingo Boingo game were to come out, that’s a different story.………..😁
