First Impressions After Playing Barrels of Fun’s Dune Pinball Machine

2025 Barrels of Fun Dune pinball machine.

I loved a lot of things about this game. The Sandworm mech is epic. Kudos to Barrels for pulling that off. The game’s art is perfect for the theme. I personally prefer this perfectly matched art style to the cartoonish colorful art on King Kong. The fact that they have the rights to all of the super famous actors from the Dune films is impressive. I liked the recent Dune movies and think that they can be a successful theme for a pin, despite the lack of nostalgia. I don’t think that every single pinball theme has to come from the 1980s or 1990s.

Having said that, I preferred the playfield layout of Kong to and the code on Dune is inexcusably early. It also would have been much better if the accessories for the game were ready to show off at launch. I know that Stern’s accessories are always horribly late, but Spooky did it right with its accessories for Evil Dead. That game’s topper was a selling point and generated massive publicity for the game. It feels as though Dune was rushed to market in a very unfinished state to beat out Kong and Harry Potter.

To me, it looks as though Dune will ultimately end up being an even better game than Barrels of Fun’s successful first machine Labyrinth.

As seen at the Pinfest show in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

played dune at Allentown and I really liked it. Thought it shot well and the audio from the movies really worked well. Art looked great. I think it’s going to be a winner, look forward to seeing it develop.

Evil dead just rocked.

FYI there were 2 Dune machines there. This one was running older code than the one that Cointaker had. HUGE difference in gameplay between the two. The latest one had a watermark stating that the assets were subject to change on screen at all times.

Oh wow. Thanks for the info. I saw both machines, but didn't realize that they had different code. I played the one at the PinballSTAR booth, so I think that was probably the one with the older code. It's odd that they wouldn't have both had the same version.

Your articles are always fair and balanced in my opinion. If other people seem like 'dicks' at times IMO it's usually because the urge to fight all the endless kumbaya heard elsewhere is strong. It's all subjective anyway but for better or worse I think the market will speak when it comes to Dune. I'll be shocked if it sells half of what Labyrinth did and I have no ill will towards BoF. Elwin gets it with 'kinetic satisfaction'. Dune looks to be near zero on this meter.

I am over ZY’s cartoon artwork. Metallica remastered looks great. Need to change things up. Evil Dead’s artwork is incredible. I can’t find one thing wrong with it. King Kong’s artwork is way to busy on the playfield and cabinet and backglass is meh.

I don’t understand people paying $13k for an LE, especially when you see what Spooky gives us for $9995. I can not wait for my game to be shipped. I am #377 and hopefully will have it in July.

I was watching the Dune video showing off the game and making of it. Dune looks so boring. Code was seriously early and offered nothing exciting for me. The worm coming up looks like an anus.
