2025 Barrels of Fun Dune pinball machine.

I loved a lot of things about this game. The Sandworm mech is epic. Kudos to Barrels for pulling that off. The game’s art is perfect for the theme. I personally prefer this perfectly matched art style to the cartoonish colorful art on King Kong. The fact that they have the rights to all of the super famous actors from the Dune films is impressive. I liked the recent Dune movies and think that they can be a successful theme for a pin, despite the lack of nostalgia. I don’t think that every single pinball theme has to come from the 1980s or 1990s.

Having said that, I preferred the playfield layout of Kong to and the code on Dune is inexcusably early. It also would have been much better if the accessories for the game were ready to show off at launch. I know that Stern’s accessories are always horribly late, but Spooky did it right with its accessories for Evil Dead. That game’s topper was a selling point and generated massive publicity for the game. It feels as though Dune was rushed to market in a very unfinished state to beat out Kong and Harry Potter.

To me, it looks as though Dune will ultimately end up being an even better game than Barrels of Fun’s successful first machine Labyrinth.

As seen at the Pinfest show in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
